Warming up milk

  • If the milk is not warm enough, place the bottle in a bowl of warm water until it reaches the right temp. Do not use the microwave as this can cause hot spots in the liquid and burn your baby's mouth.
  • If the milk is too warm, you can cool it by holding the bottle with the cap on covering the teat under cold running water.
  • Many infants "spit up" small amounts after eating or during burping.
Spitting up a small amount - less than 1 ounce - shouldn't be a concern as long as it happens within an hour of feeding and doesn't bother the baby.
  • The Department of Health recommends that bottle feeds are made up fresh when required.

If you do need to make up a feed in advance, bring water to the boil and let it cool. Pour the correct amount of water into a steralised bottle. Seal the bottle with the disk and lid and cool to room temperature.

This water can be stored in a clean place for up to 24 hours. When the feed is required, open the bottle, add the correct amount of formula powder, close the lid, shake the bottle until the powder is dissolved.
Use immediately.
