Usually six weeks after the birth, you will have a postnatal check-up. This can be done either at the hospital or by your GP. If you have had a caesarean, you may also see the doctor earlier to check your incision.
The six week examination is to check that you are recovering from pregnancy and childbirth and that your cervix has returned to normal. Your blood pressure and weight shall also be checked to ensure that they are at the correct levels. If you've had stitches, the doctor will check that they're healing. It also gives you a chance to discuss any problems you may be having or any queries you have. It is also encouraged to discuss methods of family planning for the future and a good opportunity to have a cervical smear done.
