Heart Burn - nothing to do with the heart!

Heartburn is a form of indigestion common in pregnancy, particularly the later stages, caused by stomach acid flowing up the oesophagus.

It is described as a burning sensation in the stomach and throat area.
Contributory factors can include, Stress, tension, worry, fatigue and improper diet.

If you experience heartburn

  • Eat several small meals and eat slowly;
  • Try to drink fluids separate to eating;
  • Avoid Spicy or greasy fatty foods;
  • Eat while sitting up;
  • Wait at least 1-2 hours after eating before lying down;
  • Sleep propped up on pillows;
  • Try a glass of milk before going to bed to neutralise the acid in your stomach
  • avoid coffee and alcohol.
  • Discuss this complaint with your doctor.
