Heart Burn - nothing to do with the heart!
Heartburn is a form of indigestion common in pregnancy, particularly the later stages, caused by stomach acid flowing up the oesophagus.
It is described as a burning sensation in the stomach and throat area.
Contributory factors can include, Stress, tension, worry, fatigue and improper diet.
If you experience heartburn
- Eat several small meals and eat slowly;
- Try to drink fluids separate to eating;
- Avoid Spicy or greasy fatty foods;
- Eat while sitting up;
- Wait at least 1-2 hours after eating before lying down;
- Sleep propped up on pillows;
- Try a glass of milk before going to bed to neutralise the acid in your stomach
- avoid coffee and alcohol.
