Amniocentesis / GTT

Other tests you may have during your pregnancy include;

Amniocentesis: An Amniocentesis is not routinely offered to all pregnant women because it does carry a small risk of miscarriage (about 1%). The procedure is offered only where there is an increased risk of birth defects.

Women considered at increased risk include:

  • Women over the age of 35. The risk of having a baby with a chromosomal birth defect such as Down syndrome increases with age.
  • Women with a family history of birth defects.
  • Women who present with problems in pregnancy, such as Rhesus incompatibility.

It is usually done between 15 and 18 weeks of pregnancy. A small amount of amniotic fluid is removed from your abdomen through a needle and sent to a lab for testing.

Glucose tolerance test (GTT): A GTT is done between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. You will be tested for high blood sugar in pregnancy, called gestational diabetes. You will be given a sweet soda to drink and then samples of your blood will be taken and tested.
